The vision of Trapeze Education is to bring higher-order thinking skills into math classrooms in order to provide the world with a generation of thinkers, solvers, and creators who are curious, confident, and enthusiastic about the challenges they encounter or discover.
Knowledge is not enough. To prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century, we need to nurture their ability to think analytically and creatively to define, analyze, and solve complicated and non-standard problems.
The trapeze is a symbol of something that most of us would find both challenging and intimidating. Students should routinely be trying difficult things in order to build both their competence and confidence in dealing with them.
The second metaphor has to do with providing students with a safety net when we ask them to do challenging things.
"Like many of you, I get a lot of letters from former students thanking me for some aspect of their experiece while they were in my class. The focus of most of these letters is students thanking me for pushing them out of their comfort zones and making them think. Their response to being challenged–along with the enthusiastic feedback I received on a daily basis in my classroom–is what drove me to create Trapeze Education so that many of your students can benefit from my 35 years of developing this craft."
